Reception classes vital

A reception class teacher at Dikgatlhong Primary School has applauded parents for showing interest in their children’s future by bringing them for reception class.
Speaking in an interview, Ms Lebogang Mogaetsho said reception classes were important for the development of children as it helps prepare them for the classroom and school environment.
She said it has been noted that a pupil who has passed through reception class performs better at Standard One than the one who did not. She said during reception classes children were taught discipline and how to behave in class.
She said they have 12 children in the reception class and she was happy that most of them have responded well to the programme.
“A typical example is that when they come to school, none of them could write their names but now all of them are able to do so which shows they are ready to start Standard One next year,” she said.
She said as reception teachers, they face a lot of challenges and that one has to be patient and loving.
Ms Mogaetsho decried the lack of a play ground in the school, saying it was important that they exercise for their physical development.
“Exercising helps strengthen their muscles and to develop good balance.
They also need toys that can help in developing their sensory receptors and it is unfortunate that we don’t have them, but we will do the best we can under the circumstances,” she said.
She cited another challenge of long distance as some of the children come from as far as Ramankhung, a settlement 7km away from Dikgatlhong.
She said it affects the children as they arrive at school tired and even fall asleep in class which affects their performance.
She also appealed to parents to assist their children to practice writing their names during school vacations so that they do not forget. ENDS
