Residents workers clean Parakarungu

11 Aug 2015

Chairperson of Parakarungu Village Development Committee (VDC), Mr Mogomotsi Muzebi, has applauded the village’s residents for showing team work during the recent clean-up campaign.

Mr Muzebi said they were trying to reduce breeding sites for mosquitoes as the village was one of the mosquito prone areas.

The chairperson said, as the regional cleanest village competitions were approaching, he was convinced that they would get first position as they did in 2012.

Mr Muzebi encouraged residents to clean their homes to ensure that they lived in a clean environment.

The principal environmental health officer at Chobe District Council, Mr Mabitso Setshabelo, said the council had pleadged to provide gloves, refuse bags and trucks for scrap metals, adding that they had consultative forums with community leaders concerning inspection.

The inspection would be based on visibility of government institutions, vegetation control measures, general outlook of the village, publicity material such as sign boards, refuse bins and others.

He said the village inspections were scheduled for August 17 - 27 and inspection teams would be dispatched from Pandamatenga to Parakarungu.

After the inspection, there will be a district commemoration at Kavimba on August 27.

There is where the winner will be announced with the first price being P10 000, P5 000 for second price and third price is P2 000.

Mr Setshabelo said the community should utilise the funds and use them to achieve their environmental cleanliness projects and also to achieve some of the unfinished projects in their villages.

He said for the sensitivity of the environment, they provided refuse cages in different villages instead of dumping sites.

Also, they hired some contractors to collect refuse form villages and bring them to Kasane dumping site.

Mr Setshabelo said the competitions are held every two years but as Chobe District Council, they have decided to hold them annually.

He encouraged community members to be cooperative and to consult with his office whenever they need their assistance. ENDS
