Hukuntsi airfield still on cards
10 Aug 2015
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo says plans to relocate the Hukuntsi Airstrip are in place.
Minister Mabeo told Parliament that the designs for the new airfield were completed in 2011, and the land had been secured with relevant authorities consulted. He said the project was included for funding in the National Development Plan 10 (NDP10).
However, the minister said the project was deferred due to the economic recession and had been planned to be included in the NDP 11.
In the meantime, he said the ministry would continue to undertake maintenance on the existing airfield, adding that it was in a safe operating condition.
The MP for Kgalagadi North, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi had asked the minister if he would urgently consider relocating the Hukuntsi Airstrip away from the middle of the village to a new demarcated area to avoid potential catastrophe in the likelihood of an accident occurring. ENDS
