DCs not protocol officers

10 Aug 2015

District commissioners are not expected to play any protocol functions during the consultative or kgotla meetings by Members of Parliament (MPs), but should from time to time provide briefs, the Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Frans Van Westhuizen has said.

The assistant minister said the DCs coordinate the implementation of government policies, strategies and programmes, as the most senior representatives of central government at local level.

He said the officers also organise and coordinate visits by the President and Vice President to their respective districts, by ensuring that protocol and logistical arrangements were made.

They facilitate, he said, the ministers when they visit their districts.  Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had wanted to know whether the district commissioners were expected to play any role during kgotla meetings by MPs. ENDS
