The principal education officer in the central region, Ms Oatlhotse Keitseope has implored teachers to participate in wellness activities as they play a critical role in boosting morale and hence promoting productivity.
Speaking during a Wellness Day at Motetshwane Primary School in Serowe recently, Ms Keitseope said the reason why the Ministry of Education and Skills Development saw it fit that the programme was implemented in every department was because it plays a crucial role in promoting employee good health and wellbeing.
She said wellness activities promote good health and ones wellbeing, adding that it was a pre-requisite for teachers to deliver good academic results.
“As teachers you work in environments that are hectic and sometimes stressful throughout the day, and you need such activities to boost your morale,” she said.
Ms Keitseope further explained that such activities were of importance as they promote team spirit and knowledge sharing among employees.
“Wellness depends on the individual, it is a responsibility and accountability of an individual to make it a lifestyle,” she said.
Bishop Morategi Selapa of the Pentecostal Holiness Church advised teachers to desist from being angry and emotional when at work, and to fill their inner being with love and peace.
The school head teacher, Mr Ontiretse Kenaope said there was a need to hold a wellness day at their school before the re-opening of schools in order to start the new term with refreshed minds.
He said everyone benefited from the wellness day, and that he was optimistic that it would go a long way in bringing improved school results.
He also added that the day gave them the opportunity to benchmark from other representatives from different schools.
Mr Kenaope suggested that in the future the wellness day would engage other stakeholders such as parents, noting that their collaboration with teachers was of great importance in building the future of the pupils. Ends
