Fashion design DJ categories fail to attract performers
11 Apr 2013
The newly introduced fashion design and disc jockey (DJ) categories in the President’s Day art competitions have failed to attract any aspirants from Jwaneng and surrounding areas.
The new categories were introduced this year in addition to the 24 already existing under performing and visual arts.
In an interview, the assistant youth officer in Jwaneng, Mr Albert Kanani noted that a total of 15 groups from the mining town and surrounding villages had registered to participate in the competition.
He said the competition attracted aspirants from categories such as drama, poetry and stand up comedy.
Furthermore, he observed that young people did not show much interest in the traditional category, as only one pensioner had registered for the guitar category.
He attributed the low turn up of participants to shortage of transport to reach the competition venue. He said some people had already complained that they travelled long distances at their own expenses to compete, something which they found not worthwhile.
This year’s President’s Day competitions will be held under the theme: Artistic Excellence Towards Vision 2016. ENDS
