August innovation month
05 Aug 2015
Scientific research and technological innovation are key drivers of a knowledge driven economy, says Minister of Infrastructure, Science and Technology, Mr Nonofo Molefhi.
Officiating at the launch of August as the month of science and innovation in Gaborone on Tuesday (August 4), Mr Molefhi said the government took the decision following the South African Development Community (SADC) ministers who resolved that member states should commemorate the science and technology week.
He said the resolution was based on the observation that awareness in science and technology was low, and that investment in research and development was also low.
He said the aim was to create awareness on science and showcasing scientific innovations, adding that from this month and in subsequent years beginning next year, all research institutions and universities, private sector or non-governmental organisations would have a stake in the commemoration of the month by registering their events in the programme that would run for the whole month.
Minister Molefhi further noted that indigenous knowledge was a science in its own right that should be afforded appropriate recognition and space within the national development framework.
He said the launch of the science and innovation month was critical in cultivating innovation as the World Economic Forum has noted that Botswana’s innovative capability remained low, and that it was cause for concern
For his part, the chief executive officer of Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation (BITRI), Professor Nelson Torto welcomed the development and said there was need to recognise and reward scientists.
He also said there was need to provide funding for scientific research which has transformed economies in developed countries, adding that political decisions on research have a bearing on science and innovation.
He highlighted that in science, the future was nanotechnology science which Botswana must look out for and embrace. Ends
