Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) northern staff members have donated clothes and household items to Tonota Sub-council to distribute amongst the elderly.

Officiating during the event in Tonota recently, MFDP Northern Branch treasury manager, Ms Kesetse Zwinila said the main objective of the donation is to fight poverty amongst the elders.

She said as MFDP employees, they are committed to the Presidential plea of eradicating poverty, saying over the years her ministry has been donating to various needy people in the community.

Ms Zwinila said through their gesture of donating, they are responding to one of the pillars of the national vision 2016 of a compassionate, just and caring nation.

“As a ministry, we are not left behind and are playing an active role to address various challenges that our communities are faced with. The money used to buy what we are donating today is from the funds we raise every Friday during our casual wear. Through this outfit we pop out money to answer a call within our communities,” she said.

She said Tonota village fortunately was selected and showered with the donation and the goods, which were received by the sub-council’s senior assistant council secretary, Mr Terence Ntalabgwe who will distribute them according to the various areas of needs within the village.

For his part, Mr Ntalabgwe said he was thankful to the MFDP for their helping hand.

He applauded MFDP for such a gesture as it relieves government, which is currently running short of resources.

“We are grateful for embracing government’s call, as government cannot fight and win this battle alone. We therefore urge other stakeholders and ministries to benchmark and help where it is possible as there is a lot of need in the village,” he said.

He said if all will play their role in helping government and this will “without a doubt help the country to quickly reach one of the pillars of vision 2016 of living dignified lives.” Ends
