Police educates through beauty contest

05 Aug 2015

Tonota police volunteers entertained residents with a rather unusual yet educative beauty contest, which took place at Tonota Primary School recently.

Tonota Police Sub-Inspector Chalapa Mbulawa, who is the coordinator of crime prevention programme, said the initiative  was to sensitise the community about the high incidents of defilement and women abuse in the country.

When welcoming guests at the contest, he stated that the initiative, which saw young men dressed in women attire, was a cry to help the police fight the two crimes in the country.

“As part of fundraising for the grand finale, which will take place at Tonota College of Education later this month, Tonota police volunteers intend to instil the importance of women in society,” he said.

He said their main aim was to give women support by having men parading as women in order to entertain and educate the nation.

He noted that the area registered 138 rape cases and 53 defilement cases from 2012 to date.

The most entertaining part of the event was that the nine contestants were named according to police charges. There was theft common, arson, defilement, rape, dagga, house breaking, murder, burglary and robbery.

On the entertainment side, the audience was kept on their feet by a music group called Heel’s Comet, which is composed of fellow volunteers who sang informative songs.

Local food such as bogobe ba lerotse and seswaa were sold at the event, which saw burglary winning first place and robbery and murder came second and third respectively.

Sub Insp. Mbulawa pleaded with the audience to help spread the message, and encouraged them to attend the grand finale in high numbers as it would be eventful and entertaining.  Ends
