PE has no grade 1 senior teachers
29 Jul 2015
There are no senior teachers grade 1 for physical education at senior secondary school level.
Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya said it was due to the small enrolments and few teachers offering the subject.
Mr Goya said where there were two or more teachers in a school; one may be asked to coordinate the subject, which was developmental for the officer, if they were not remunerated. “Currently teachers of physical education may develop and grow within the education system through promotional posts of senior teacher grade 1- sports or other similar positions of responsibility such as senior teacher guidance and counselling or senior teacher grade 1-library,” the assistant minister explained.
Mr Goya said physical education was represented at principal education officer 1 level in the Department of Curriculum Development and Evaluation.
The assistant minister also said he was not aware of any study that had been carried out to look specifically at physical education senior teachers at grade 1 positions in senior secondary schools.
Boteti East MP, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister to explain when the senior teacher position for physical education would be availed and why teachers were made to coordinate while they would not be paid because there were no posts for the subject. Ends
