Member of Parliament for Mochudi East, Mr Isaac Davids, has urged the Anglican Church to promote good behaviour.

Mr Davids said this at the Anglican Church annual Guild Conference of Diocese of Botswana in Mochudi on recently.

He expressed gratitude to the youth who attended the conference and expressed his wish that others could follow in their footsteps so as to avoid being trapped by social ills.

MP Davids said the escalating rate of alcohol and drug abuse, which contributed to increased road accidents, delinquency and criminal activities was a concern to the community leaders.

In 2008, President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama appointed a joint advisory committee comprising of Ntlo ya Dikgosi members and Botswana Council of Churches to look into the social and moral issues affecting Batswana, he said.

The committee traversed the country consulting Batswana and came to an agreement that indeed the country was facing a challenge.

The appointment of this committee, Mr Davids said, was a clear indication and emphasis on the importance of the church in shaping the social and moral conduct of the society.

He applauded the church for a service where Mochudi prison inmates and other individuals benefited from the donation of basic items.

Mr Davids commended them for the noble gesture, saying it demonstrated that as Christians, they had been called to show compassion and love to one another.

The donation, he added, was in line with the Vision 2016 pillar of a just, compassionate and caring nation.

For his part, Bishop of the Diocese of Botswana, Right Reverend Metlhayotlhe Beleme urged the congregation to be renewed in every part of their lives and recognise God, adding that the recognition and acceptance of God would make them better people in the society and contribute positively to the morals of the society.

The conference was also attended by Dioceses from Port Elizabeth, Kimberly & Kuruman, Johannes burg and Pretoria. ENDS
