Alcohol abuse worries Sebina elders

09 Apr 2013

Elderly people at Sebina in the Tutume Sub-district have expressed concern about the youth who indulge in excessive consumption of alcohol.

In an interview, one resident, Mr Simon Malibala lamented that young people spent most of their time at bars drinking alcohol. Mr Malibala said the situation was worrisome and called for action to be taken before the situation could get out of control.

He noted that there were various government schemes, meant to empower the youth, but it seemed they were not interested because they spent more time at bars instead of applying for such programmes.

Another resident, Ms Taboka Misiyose said the rate of alcohol abuse in Sebina was worrisome, adding that young people would have no future if they did not stop the habit. Furthermore, Ms Misiyose called for cooperation among village leaders to address the issue.

Mr Moshe Wally said, due to alcohol abuse, most youngsters had turned into thugs.  One of the youths, Obusitswe Masala said alcohol abuse in the village needed immediate action, adding that it  bred social ills.

Mr Wililani Buka said youth should group themselves in order top take advantage of government programmes and make a meaningful contribution to the country’s economy. ENDS
