Softball giants meet in Phikwe

15 Jul 2015

Softball giants across the country will over the President Day holidays descend in Selebi Phikwe to take part in one of the biggest softball tournaments in the country, the Selebi Phikwe Softball Extravaganza.

The tournament has grown bigger and better over the years attracting sponsorship boost from a number of companies in the copper mining town.

This year a whooping P359 000 has been put aside as prize money for all the 16 teams that will be competing.

Champions from both men and women will walk away with a record breaking prize money of P60 000 with the bottom most pocketing P8 000.

Sparks are expected to fly high in the ladies bracket X where rivals Wells and Police will seek to settle an unfinished deal as the league champions and runner ups.

Wells travels to Selebi Phikwe to cement supremacy as the league champions but it would not be a smooth sail as the wounded Police will be in pursuit to overturn the April 12 league final result where the former narrowly beat them 5-4.

Joining them in bracket X is Motlakase and the hosts, Comets who pose a home ground advantage threat. Tournament defending champions Dinare have been pitted against Panthers, Carats and Rail Giants in bracket Y.

Bracket B of the men category fields missiles BDF who pose a double threat as the tournament defending champions and also league title holders.

The army boys have over recent years stamped authority in the softball pitch lifting every silverware following the disbandment of the northern zone army side Scramblers who used to give them a tough time.

Mahalapye based, Rail Giants will go to the tournament keen to redeem the Northern zone name and quench the thirst following a long dry spell in the North.

Police and Carats complete bracket B while bracket A fields hosts Comets, Rebels, the Jwaneng duo of Gatalamotho and Wells.

The tournament which will be played from July 18-20 is sponsored by BCL, Komatsu, Focussed Engineering Solutions, Bridgestone and Puma. Ends
