MEWR eases power cuts for well fields

13 Jul 2015

Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources has no plans to install standby generators at Malwelwe, Gaotlhobogwe and Suping due to high cost involved, says Mr Nonofo Molefhi.

Answering a question in Parliament on behalf of minister responsible, Mr Molefhi, who is Minister of Infrastructure, Science and Technology said to mitigate the frequent power cuts that interrupt water supply to Molepolole, the Water Utilities Corporation WUC has agreed with Botswana Power Corporation to allow for isolation of Malwelwe, Gaotlhobogwe and Suping well fields during planned power supply management schedules and the project was scheduled for completion in mid-August this year.

He said during unscheduled power interruptions and emergent faults, well fields would also be affected but the impact would be minimal.

Molepolole South MP, Dr Tlamelo Mmatli had asked the minister if he would consider installing stand-by generators at the high yield boreholes at Malwelwe, Gaotlhobogwe and Suping given the frequent power cuts that interrupt water supply to Molepolole. ENDS
