Maun Chief Magistrate Mompati Taolo says communities are key players in crime prevention interventions.

Speaking at a crime prevention event organised by Boseja cluster with the Maun Police at Boseja ward in Maun recently, Mr Taolo said people should ensure their safety at their homes and businesses.

The police, he said, were faced with a mammoth task in the fight against crime as well as investigation of criminal cases.
Mr Taolo stated that the police have challenges of resources that might not be readily available to assist the community at all times.

He encouraged members of the community to have active neighborhood watch clusters and put in place other security measures such as security alarms.

Earlier, Assistant Superintendent Oarabile Hulela of Maun police said Boseja Cluster which is made up of Boseja, Disaneng and Boseja-Kubung wards have many cases of crime.

Asp Hulela said they have so far recorded 29 cases of rape from January to June 2015 in Boseja cluster compared to eight cases in 2014, a trend he said was worrisome, he said rape incidents took place at homes, some during daylight while some happened at night after carousing.

He said rape is a serious crime which strips the victim of their dignity while some victims are infected with sexual transmitted infections.

Another worrying trend, he said, was that of defilement as three cases were recorded in 2015, while they were two cases in 2014.

Furthermore, Asp Hulela expressed shock that people in Boseja cluster communities were still lured by false prophets at a high rate.

He said many people lost large sums of money to fake prophets who promised to increase their money, however Asp Hulela advised the community to be vigilant and guard against such crooks.

The other common cases, he said were that of stealing, break-ins, damage to property and assault common. Ends
