Wonder Sporting drop points

07 Apr 2013

Wonder Sporting  dropped two crucial points in their quest for promotion to the premier league after enduring a goalless draw with struggling Young Strikers at the SSG grounds on Saturday.

The draw was a serious blow for the police-backed club, which dominated the match but was frustrated by a combination of solid defending by Young Strikers rear-guard and woeful finishing from their forwards. Forwards Duncan Kgopolelo, Farasai Nyamunamendo and Thato Madima were the guiltiest for spurning glorious opportunities.

It was the second consecutive match that Wonder’s strikers hit blanks as their floundering form in the second round continued.

That should be worrying for head coach, Sthanda Mogwadi with the team only managing two wins out of six matches in the second round, dropping nine points in the process.

After leading the division for the entire first round and appearing strong bet for back-to-back promotions, the team’s recent indecisiveness has blown the title race open and Jwaneng Comets have sneaked into contention and are now pushing Wonder strongly for promotion.

Wonder have 33 points from 17 matches with the league left with five matches.

Mogwadi blamed their drop in form on their inability to convert clear-cut chances, and admitted that their sloppiness was harming their promotion aspirations.

Mogwadi however said Wonder, which had exceeded expectations by challenging for the first division championship a year after being promoted from regional football, would continue pushing.

“We need to sort out our scoring problems and everything would be fine.

There are still a number of matches remaining and anything can happen in those matches,” said the coach. BOPA
