Mathematics Association of Botswana (MAB) has sent a team of six young students to participate in the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad, starting July 8 -16 in Chang Mai, Thailand.

Speaking  during  the sending off ceremony held in Gaborone recently, chairperson for MAB, Mr Mathews Masole said the contestants will have a chance to interact with other high school learners from over 100 countries from around the world.

“Our students will be exposed to not only solving mathematical problems but also practicing social skills in a multi-cultural environment,” he said.

Mr Masole said the competition is not meant to overemphasise winning but, the consideration is accorded to the experience and valuable opportunity for learners to learn about their potential.

Giving an overview of MAB, Mr Masole said their mission, is to advance the learning and teaching of mathematical sciences at primary, secondary and tertiary level in Botswana through competitions, leadership, professional development and research.

He said MAB continues to contribute meaningfully to the development and implementation of the mathematics curriculum at all levels of education, which are primary, and secondary level.

“We continue to nurture our great brains at an early age outside the confines of the classroom,” he said.

He said in an attempt to motivate learners to do mathematics and science, an opportunity is created for learners who excel in mathematics to compete nationally and internationally.

Giving farewell remarks one parent, Ms Tinaye Olekantse whose son is partaking in the competition, urged students to be the cream of the country, and to believe in themselves, parents and teachers as the have been through a tough competition from star, for selection of the best six to represent Botswana.

She encouraged students to unite to reach their desired destinations. She also advised them to be well disciplined as they are representing Botswana in the most prestigious event. ENDS
