'Be aware of mozwane'

07 Apr 2013

Women Against Rape (WAR), a human rights organisation based in Maun has alerted parents in Maun and the surrounding areas about an emerging practice called Mozwane.

WAR’s head counselor, Mr Gabalape Tauejele said mozwane was a practice where some students saved money given to them by parents for transport and food and later buy alcohol and drugs.

He said students group themselves to buy alcohol and drugs, hire a combi or taxi to drive them to a certain spot of their choice where they would spend their time drinking and taking drugs.

Mr Tauejele alleged that students from both primary and secondary schools were involved in the practice, adding that this had a great potential to affect students’ academic performance.

The head counselor said because of the tight security and strictness of the school community nowadays, students found it difficult to practice mozwane in schools.

This, he noted, then forced students to resort to the practice as it was done outside the school premises with no one to control them.

He said during the practice, most students engaged in sexual activities and other ills.

Mr Tauejele said students in towns practiced mozwane but it had found its way in Maun, adding that some parents were also involved in this activity.

Mr Tauejele said alcohol and drug abuse was rampant amongst school going children in Maun, saying his office was receiving many complaints and doing some counselling sessions for students brought by their parents regarding alcohol and drug abuse. ENDS
