Whistle Blowers Protection Bill for July Parliament
05 Jul 2015
The Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration Mr Eric Molale is set to table the Whistle Blower’s Protection Bill during the third meeting of the first session of the eleventh Parliament.
The legal instrument provides for the manner in which a person may disclose information in the public interest, and provide for the manner of reporting and investigations of disclosure of impropriety.
It will also protect whistle blowers against victimisation. The Bill follows calls for a law to protect whistle blowers so as to bolster the national anti-corruption strategy.
The Bill will be presented at an opportune time as the government, in collaboration with the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime and the Botswana Institute of Development and Policy Analysis (BIDPA), is working on an Anti-Corruption Policy.
In addition, President Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama noted in his State of The Nation Address during the third session of the tenth Parliament that to further empower the DCEC, a Bill revising the Corruption and Economic Crime Act will be tabled before Parliament.
Should the Bill be passed, it will protect individuals who in the public interest disclose information that relates to corrupt and illegal activities, and further ensure a holistic approach to the fight against corruption. ENDS
