28 Jun 2015

Exceptional public servants in the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning were rewarded for ‘working their fingers to the bone’ in the last financial year and exceeding set targets in a glamorous award ceremony  in Gaborone recently.

Addressing employees, who did well above call of duty and seemingly ‘burnt the candle at both ends’, Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Mr Kenneth Matambo, said the employees had worked hard to ensure that Batswana received good service from his Ministry.

“This event provides an opportunity to spend time together and feel good about progress that our ministry has made in the last 12 months and for individual staff members to be recognized for their hard work at their work stations…these are the people who went an extra mile to demonstrate their sense of creativity and commitment to provision of quality service,” he said.

Furthermore, minister Mathambo said the awards, which were held for the second time, were a part of the build up to Botswana Public Service Day commemorations that wouldl be held in July 9-10 against the backdrop of the United Nations Assembly Resolution which has designated 23 June as the UN Public Service Day.

On other issues he said labour market efficiency-which recognizes the efficiency and flexibility of labour market which ensures that workers are allocated to their most effective use in the economy and provided with incentives to give their best effort in their jobs was pointed out by World Economic Forum as one of the primary weaknesses facing the country’s economy followed by poor work ethic within the national workforce today.

He challenged all to continue to strive to do their best.
The Ministry awarded about 22 employees who have been loyal to public service for 25 years and 58 public servants who fell in the bracket of 30 years long service.

Amongst many award recipients of the day Setlaajang Mosipidi and Tebogo Botlhoko were awarded overall best performers under the Office of Accountant General, Tafara Mudyanevana was awarded overall best performer under the Development and Budget Division while Tankiso Kgasa emerged tops under the Economic and Financial Policy Division.

Under Department of Internal Audit Ditebogo Moseki and Tlhabologo Babutsi outperformed the rest of the employees.

Closing the auspicious awards ceremony, Permanent Secretary in the ministry of Finance and Development Planning Mr Solomon Sekwakwa thanked all for exuding excellence and commitment in discharging their duties.

He encouraged those who did not win awards to embrace those who did as that was the spirit of togetherness that can take the Ministry of Finance Development Planning to reach greater heights. Ends
