The number of destitute persons in Kgatleng increased from 1 317 in May to 1 327 this month representing a 0.7 per cent growth.
Addressing Kgatleng District full council meeting on Monday (June 22), the council chairperson, Mr Mpho Morolong said out of the number, 1 180 were permanent while 147 were on temporary basis.
He said beneficiaries continued to be assisted with basic needs such as food, shelter, funeral services and medical services. However, Mr Morolong said due to some contractual challenges there had been some delays in assisting some beneficiaries but the matter was being addressed accordingly.
In other safety social network issues, the chairperson said the council had registered 1 389 needy students and 87 children in need of care across the district. Mr Morolong said they werefaced with a challenge of shortage of coupon cards from the department of social protection resulting in delay on the provision of services.
He said a lot of registered beneficiaries were being assisted through the old tendering system or quotations which delays service provision.
He further said according to the district rehabilitation office, there are 706 people living with disability who are registered throughout the district and are being provided with various services such as crutches, wheel chairs, food and other services depending on their needs. Ends
