More than 500 athletes will compete at the Gaborone Half Marathon, a charity event organised by Sports Entertainment this Sunday, June 21.

The event consists of three races, the 21 kilometres, 10 kilometres, and five kilometres fun run.

Its starting and finishing points are at Riverwalk Mall.  Sports Entertainment events executive, Thapelo Radikgokong has explained that top athletes including Rapula Diphoko, Sesebo Matlapeng, and Joyce Tau would compete at the event.

She said winners of the 21km category would get P3 000 while the runners-up would pocket P2 000. Furthermore, she said winners of the 10km category would pocket P2 000.

“The race has already drawn over 500 people and is still expected to draw many more runners from all over Gaborone and the surrounding areas,” Sports Entertainment Managing Director, Nobantu Sebonego explained through a press statement on Wednesday, June 17.

She said 40 percent of proceeds from the event would be donated to their cause, the Kagisano Society Women’s Shelter, which aims to fight gender based violence, especially violence targeting women in Botswana.

“Through the Gaborone Half Marathon, Sports Entertainment is also aiming to raise awareness on Women’s abuse issues by partnering up with Kagisano Society Women’s Shelter. Their vision is to end gender based violence in Botswana through the provision of temporary shelter, counselling, community education and outreach on gender based violence and advocacy,” Sebonego said.

She asked companies and members of the public to donate to the women’s shelter through the Gaborone Half Marathon. ENDS
