Nijel Amos tops rankings

08 Jun 2015

Nijel ‘Zoro’ Amos ended the IAAF Diamond league circuit on a high note when he finished first during the Sainsbury’s Birmingham Grand- Prix Diamond League meeting in Birmingham, England on Sunday (June 7).

Amos recorded 1:46.77 followed by the Polish, Adam Kszcof, with 1:47.03 and Lewandowski Marcin came third with 1:47.45.

During the race, the Marobela-born lad proved that class is permanent and form just temporary, when he executed his sprinting skills in the remaining 200 meters of the final lap, and hit the finish line ahead of the two Polish runners who were on his neck in the remaining 400 metres.

The results mean that Amos tops the 800 metres ranking with six points, despite the fact that he missed the first race which was held in Doha, and lost two races to the Ethiopian man, Mohammed Aman.

In their meeting in Eugune, Aman beat Amos to finish first with 1:44.92, while Zoro recorded 1:45.06. Aman repeated his feat against Amos in Rome when he scooped position one with 1:43.56,whereas the 2012 Olympic Silver medalist finished in position two with 1:43.80.

However it seems, Aman’s deed did not shake nor scare Amos, as he told BOPA that the world should be patient with him, because he was just recovering from an injury that forced him to miss training from some time.

“I missed training as I was nursing a quad injury and it forced me to withdraw from the Diamond League opener on May 15 that was held in Qatar-Doha,” he said.

Furthermore, he said this year, he treaded careful not to injure himself as he did not want to miss the World Championship, which he missed in 2013 due to injury.

“The bottom line is that, I don’t want to risk and end up watching the world championship from the couch, mind you, I will be making my debut there, so this time around I want to see my name in the starting list, I want to go to Beijing and compete,” he said.

About the poor time he clocked at the Birmingham meet, Zoro said for now he was not worried about time, but all he wanted was a win.

However, he assured his fans that he was recovering fast from his injury and confident that in a month time he would be on fire in the Diamond League meeting to be held in Lausanne. ENDS
