VDCs potential untapped

The Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi says Village Development Committees (VDCs) across Botswana have potential to turn themselves into huge self-sustained entities if the many assets they have can be put to good use.
Mr Masisi said during a kgotla meeting addressed by Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso recently in Moshupa that if properly managed an array of assets belonging to VDCs would put them in a better stead to borrow money and further develop themselves.
“I plead with you therefore to go do an inventory of all your assets and come up with modalities to further develop yourselves,” he said adding that with prudent management, VDCs would be able to pay its members and even attract professionals into their fold.
Mr Masisi, who is also MP for Moshupa, concurred with Ms Tshireletso that VDCs are part of the reason Botswana has and continue to make huge strides in developing the people.
He said since their establishment, VDCs had always been hinged upon the spirit of volunteerism above financial gain; something he insisted had to be upheld for the country to move forward.
Mr Masisi, who is also the Rural Development Council chairperson, pledged government support to make VDCs impactful. ENDS
