Director of basic education, Mr Lesego Morake, has urged the youth to refrain from engaging in alcohol and drug abuse.
Speaking at the House of Peace Orphan Shelter School visitation with the Department of Basic Education on June 2 at Moselewapula Secondary School, Mr Morake said the country was concerned about the indulgence of students in drugs and alcohol which leads to unwanted behaviours.
He said Botswana value the idea of Botho, a root value in Botswana’s culture and it implies that a certain behaviour is desirable to the community, hence the need for students to obey and respect their parents and teachers, both at home and school and take their studies seriously to reap the benefits.
Mr Morake advised the students to repent, adding that it was for them to secure themselves a bright future by concentrating on their studies.
He said it was vital that teachers and parents unite and fight up this moral decay which was likely to ruin the lives of the youth, who are the future of Botswana.
Mr Morake briefed students about the consequences of indulging in drugs and alcohol which include school drop outs and unwanted pregnancies.
“The Ministry of Education is prepared to assist you in achieving your common goal of basic education,” said Mr Morake.
Mr Morake decried that vandalism was prevalent in most of schools as a result of drugs and substance abuse by students.
He advised them to preserve government property for the next generation.
For her part, Moselewapula School head, Ms Bakadzikanyi Rauwe said the initiatives of House of Peace and Basic Education Department are panacea for the problems faced by the students.
Ms Rauwe told students that their personal fortunes hinge heavily on how they cross the bridge from one reality into another, and make their choices during the transition. She told them that the nation looks up to them to lead today and tomorrow. Ends
