Somolekae still BPL chairperson

01 Jun 2015

Arnold Somolekae says he is still the Botswana Premier League (BPL) chairperson. His statement followed the rumour mill that went on the over-drive with his resignation on Sunday night (May 31),

Interviewed for clarity today (June 1), Somolekae confirmed that he indeed offered to resign from his post during a heated BPL board meeting, but the board did not endorse his resignation. There were rumours that the BPL vice chairperson, Monnakgotla Mojaki, had assumed the role of interim chairperson after Somolekae’s alleged resignation.

“I did tender my resignation but they failed to endorse it, therefore I will continue as chairman of Botswana Premier League,” Somolekae explained.

Somolekae, who is also the chairperson of Notwane, said he felt pressured to resign because some board members were questioning his neutrality regarding the protracted saga involving Sankoyo Bush Bucks.

Somolekae on Friday (May 29) announced that Sankoyo had been docked 29 points for using an improperly registered player, which effectively relegated the Maun-based team and saved Notwane from relegation.

He said his decision to resign was because of the fact that he felt conflicted on the matter. BPL also posted a message on its website confirming that Somolekae was still chairperson. ENDS
