Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) in the United States recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Oodi campus.
A press release from BIUST states that the MOU, which was signed by BIUST’s acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Steven Howell and the MST Provost, Dr Warren Wray is the first step in the partnership between the institutions which will result in scholarly and scientific interaction between the two.
There will also be exchange opportunities for academic staff and students as well as joint research projects, exchange of academic materials, curriculum development and joint organisation of seminars and academic meetings.
The release notes that MST was founded in 1870 as one of America’s first technological schools and has become one of America’s top research universities.
Furthermore, it has produced engineers, scientists and innovators who helped drive the Industrial Revolution and launch the Space Age.
Missouri University offers more than 65 degree programmes in engineering, science, computing and technology, business, management systems, humanities and the liberal arts.
As Botswana’s second government funded university, BIUST has a mandate to offer science, engineering and technology programmes at the same standard as the world’s top universities.
The release states that partnerships with well-known international universities such as Missouri are part of the strategy BIUST is using to achieve its mandate.
“As BIUST continues to develop its programmes in engineering and science we look forward to a close working relationship with professors and academic leadership at MST, and BIUST has already seen fruit from this relationship through assistance in developing its mining and energy engineering programmes provided through MST,” Professor Howell said following the signing of the MoU.
