Minister aware of water quality situation at Inalegolo
13 Apr 2015
The Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Mr Kitso Mokaila says he is aware of the water quality situation at Inalegolo which is supplied by BH 8881 situated in the village.
The minister said the ministry previously received non complying water sample results, especially in 2014. He said this was chiefly due to vandalism of water pipes by farmers at the storage tank to water their livestock, thus allowing soil and other organisms to enter the distribution network.
He said the presence of these foreign elements changed the colour and taste of the water for Inalegolo. To remedy the situation, he said the water reservoir was fenced in January 2015, and that since then the quality of the water has improved due to reduced vandalism.
He further told Parliament that there was routine water quality monitoring, and that the last samples were taken on 1 April 2015 as part of the continuous monitoring process, and that the water quality was acceptable for human consumption.
In addition, he said Water Utilities Corporation was currently considering equipping BH8882 to augment supply to Inalegolo, but not because of water quality issues.
Kgalagadi North MP, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi had asked the minister if he was aware of the poor quality of drinking water at Inalegolo, and whether he would consider equipping a borehole with good potable water which was located 12km away and reticulate water to the village. ENDS
