Curtains fall on softball league

The Botswana Fibre Network (BoFiNet) softball league season curtain falls this weekend at the National Diamond where teams shall battle for the coveted P100 000 prize money.

This season was bigger and better all thanks to the P1 million sponsorship deal from BOFINet, which ensued that champions from both women and men walk away with a history breaking price money of P100 000 each.


Botswana Softball Association (BSA)  and BoFiNet partnership set off last year and it saw a total of P649 000 being dedicated to the teams’ prize money as every club would pocket cash as the league ends.

League defending champions BDF IX men and women would seek to win double silverware this weekend as they both qualified for the championship. But it would not be a walk in the park for the BDF troupes now that every team eyes the mouthwatering prize money.

In the past, teams have dragged their feet to the finals as the champions were rewarded handful P16 000 but this year teams will go home singing the BoFiNet mantra. Panthers and Rail Giants men are still reeling in delight after finishing in the lead during the top eight games last month. Panthers came number one in Bracket one while Rail Giants also snatched position one in Bracket two as they will be joined by the number twos BDF IX and Police IX.

The ladies category will be the battle of the Southern zone teams as it pitted Police IX, Dinare, BDF IX and Wells. Police IX and BDF IX ladies having qualified alongside their men have an advantage as they will be drawing motivation from their brothers.

Nevertheless, Selebi Phikwe extravaganza 2014 champions Dinare, should not be underestimated as they can deliver major upsets as they demonstrated during the top eight finishing in the top spot of Bracket one.

The ladies from the Diamond mining town, Wells can also be troublesome at times holding a good record as they have played in the finals numerous times. On Saturday (April 11) morning, games will kick off with defending champions, BDF ladies going head to head against Wells at the National Diamond while at UB Diamond men defending champions BDF IX tackle Police IX at the same time.
