Lobatse taps on sports power

Lobatse Town Council has turned to sports to boost the socio-economic development of the town.

The council will be hosting the fourth annual marathon on April 12 as a way of promoting the town and bringing in potential investors.

“This initiative is geared towards promoting the town and bringing in people to discover what it has to offer in terms of investment, services, products and entertainment.
We also want to assist the less privileged members of the society through donation of proceeds”, the council public relations officer, Ofentse Thwabi said in an interview.

He said the main sponsor of the event would be Master Sprint and they also managed to get other sponsors like Letshego Financial Services who sponsored the event at the tune of P50 000 for prize money plus 200 T-shirts, Cally Clothing offered 300 t-shirts, Robot Auto 46 medals and trophies for the winners while Cumberland Hotel popped P15 000 and snacks and Barclays Bank contributed P5 000.

According to Thwabi, the marathon will be divided into two categories, corporate team and individual marathon. The corporate team comprises of ten people to participate in the 10 km race and the first runner will win P1500, second runner P1250 and the third runner will pocket P1000.

As for the individual category the races are divided into three races, 5km, 10km and 21 km. Thwabi said the winning prizes for 5km races for both women and men will see the position one pocketing P500 each, second runners will get P350 each and the third runners will get away with P200 each.

He said the 10 km athletes will see first runners getting away with cash amounting to P3000, second runner P2 500 and the third runner will cash P2000. Moreover he said, the 21 km race will see first runners getting away with P10 000 each, second runners P 7 500 each and third runners P5 000 each. ENDS
