BDF bands raise funds for Ghanzi community
25 Mar 2013
Botswana Defence Force (BDF) band over the weekend held a community outreach concert in Ghanzi to raise funds geared at addressing the challenge of housing faced by the under privileged community.
According to jazz musician, Lister Boleseng, they chose to work with the community of Ghanzi to give back to them for their great support over the years.
“The people of Ghanzi have supported BDF concerts from way back, now we want to give back to them,” stated Boleseng.
He said the Ghanzi community encouraged and supported them from the very first gig of BDF Bands in Concert Style which is held throughout the country every December.
Although BDF Bands in Concert Style was last staged in Ghanzi in 2010, Lister noted that there might be a comeback of the show this year. However, he said that was still to be decided as they pick places to stage such concerts randomly each year.
The concerts, which were initiated by President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama while he was the deputy commander of BDF, are meant to help government fill the gap by assisting the disadvantaged communites and to build and develop the nation.
Earlier during the day, BDF band entertained students and gave a motivational talk in line with Month of Youth Against Aids theme. The students were enlightened on how to handle challenges in life, particularly that they are the most vulnerable group affected by these challenges.
They were reminded that life in the music industry is not all rosy and glamorous as it looks.
Proceeds from the concerts will be directed to a chosen charity in the Ghanzi community, after consultation with social workers. ENDS
