Teachers paid overtime
31 Mar 2015
The overtime policy is progressive and teachers, just like other public officers, are paid overtime allowances for additional hours engaged beyond normal working hours, says Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya.
He said over P151 million had been paid to teachers as overtime allowance from April 2014 to February 2015.
He said the issue of considering paying them commuted overtime allowance was a condition of service that had to be subjected to discussions by the Public Service Bargaining Council through the employer as in the Directorate of Public Service Management.
The MP for Boteti East, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked if the minister was aware that the overtime policy was not progressive as teachers were not paid overtime allowance, which demotivated them and had a negative bearing on the learning process.
He also wanted to know if the minister would consider paying teachers commuted overtime allowance for a period of 30 days instead of the current 22 days prescribed by the Public Service Act. ENDS
