Phaphane improves pass rate

31 Mar 2015

Phaphane Primary School has remained the leading school in Kgatleng District with an improved pass rate of 90 per cent in 2014 as compared to 84.5 per cent in 2013.

Briefing the full council session recently, council chairperson, Mr Mpho Morolong applauded the head teacher and the teaching staff for the good work and urged other schools to learn from them.

Mr Morolong said there was no significant change in the performance of 2014 Primary School Leaving Examinations noting that in 2013, the district registered 61.7 per cent quantity pass and 61.1 per cent in 2014 adding that the district improved slightly qualitatively by 0.7 per cent.

He  said there was an improved performance in 2014 Junior Certificate results, as four junior schools attained more than the national target of 40 per cent quality pass compared to two schools in 2013.

“Sedibelo and Kgamanyane junior schools need to be applauded for the improvement made having moved from a quality pass of 28.3 per cent in 2013 to 44 per cent in 2014 and 26.8 per cent in 2013 to 39.6 per cent improving by 12.8 per cent respectively,” noted Mr Morolong.

About the district senior school, he said in 2013 Molefi got position 18 out of 32 senior schools noting that in 2014 it attained position 16 which he said was a slight improvement.

He however urged the councillors  to continue supporting the school management and students to upward movement in their performance.

Regarding the feeding programme, Cllr Morolong said the programme was doing well in primary schools and the supply to date had been satisfactory even though school cooking pots had been a challenge as they had not been functioning reliably.

“To that effect a maintenance contract for the equipment was done and is currently running until March 31, this has greatly improved the situation,” he said.

The council chairperson said they have decided to purchase 50 litre pots for schools with relatively low enrolment so that they could use industrial stoves for cooking when the pots are down.

Furthermore, he noted that three schools of Ntshinoge, Oodi and Kgabosereto primary schools are currently under construction at a cost of P25 million and expected to be completed before the end of this year.

He said they were busy preparing documentation for the implementations of another backlog eradication project at Ramogotsi primary school adding that the project was scheduled to be implemented in the next financial year.

The chairperson said the six major maintenance works that were scheduled to be undertaken in the coming financial year were at an advanced stage except for Oodi which he said had gone for re-tender. ENDS
