Police Prisons differ in scope

29 Mar 2015

The duties of the Botswana Police Services and Prisons were in the past subjected to job evaluation, which confirmed that the mandate, scope and operational environment for the two organisations were not the same and the grading of one was not dependent on the other.

This was said by the Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi, when answering a question in Parliament on March 26.

“Notwithstanding, the difference in core salaries of the two services, there were two similarities in terms of entitlement to certain benefits and privileges such as technical skills allowance, professional, band, shift and overtime allowances” he said.

Mr Kgathi said government had commissioned different consultancies between September 2014 and February 2015 to review pay and conditions of service for the Botswana Police Service, the Botswana Defence Force and Prisons.

The consultancies, he said, were completed in February 2015 and their respective findings were still being processed so as to be taken through government consultation process.

Member of Parliament for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse had wanted to know if the Ministry of Defence, Justice and Security would address the income disparities between officers of the Botswana Prison Service and the Botswana Police Services with a view to improve the salaries of officers of the Botswana Prison Service whose work complements that of the Police.
