OLDM launches quantum leap

25 Mar 2015

Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtsha Mines (OLDM), in their ambition to become the safest mine in the world, recently launched 2015 quantum series campaign initiative dubbed The Quantum Leap.

The quantum leap, together we can, is geared towards driving a collective effort of achieving zero harm aspiration as well as taking giant steps towards significant improvements.

The quantum leap campaign follows a series of campaigns since 2012 which successfully initiated and implemented ECOHS (environment, communities, occupational health and safety) performance improvement campaigns.

“The achievement of zero harm in the workplace is a top priority for Debswana Diamond Company as we thrive towards a high performance culture,” OLDM acting general manager Mr Bakani Motlhabani has said during the safety and sustainable development campaign launch.

The OLDM acting general manager challenged all to continuously reduce and or eliminate incidents of injuries at workplaces. He also challenged employees to ensure that they have delivered in 2018, the end of the current strategy window.

“It is becoming clearer and clearer that we need to do more to get everyone to understand and execute pre-task assessment and risk mitigation correctly,” Mr Motlhabani encouraged.

He also revealed that reviews of recent incidents have revealed critical learning such as people identifying risks and not putting controls or mitigating factors in place. Consequently he appealed to all to take a quantum leap towards zero harm.

The successful implementation of the 2015 campaign shall be demonstrated by the level of ECOHS performance improvement over time which is dependent on our understanding and assimilation of the key focus areas, senior safety and sustainable development manager Mr George Sehunelo has said.

He informed his audience that the goal of attaining ECOHS excellence was aligned to Debswana strategic vision of being a global leading practice.

“It is only when we enthusiastically infuse the requirements for attaining ECOHS excellence that the vision can be a reality,” Mr Sehunelo said and added that successful campaign required total commitment by all employees, strategic business partners and members of the community.

ECOHS performance is said to be synonymous with sustainability performance and is one of the key indicators that Debswana look unto in the quest of being a global benchmark practice.

It is therefore deliberate that throughout the years we systematically plan for, implement, review, and act on strategies and initiatives that can see us continuously improving our ECOHS performance, senior ore processing manager Mr Edwin Elias said. ENDS
