Khama attends Geingob inauguration

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama on Saturday March 21 attended the inauguration ceremony of the newly elected Namibia president, Dr Hage Geingob and the 25th independence anniversary.

President Khama was accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, the Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Eric Molale, former presidents, Sir Ketumile Masire and Mr Festus Mogae and senior government officials.

President Geingob previously served as prime minister and takes over from Dr Hifikepunye Pohamba.

In an interview upon their return, Dr Venson-Moitoi said although pre-elections in Namibia were initially characterised by minor challenges, they did not disturb the electoral process hence democracy prevailed. 

Quizzed on the role Botswana played in building democracy in Namibia, Dr Venson-Moitoi noted that when Namibia gained independence in 1990, its first stop was Botswana where they benchmarked on good governance and the country’s constitution.

 She said the Ministry of Local Government played a key role in shaping the Namibian local governance. 

Dr Venson-Moitoi said Botswana enjoys cordial relations with Namibia and that the countries would continue to work together in trade, agriculture, transport and communications, education, energy, tourism, diamonds as well as immigration and citizenship.

She said trade between the two countries remain healthy as some local companies were doing business in Namibia, adding that local companies continue to import goods through Walvis Bay in Namibia.

Furthermore, she said the fibre optic cable that runs from Europe to Swakopmund, Namibia, and enters Botswana, the West Africa Cable System (WACS), has reduced the cost of Internet communication. It was launched by President Khama and the outgoing Namibia leader, Dr Pohamba which shows the cooperation between the two countries to uplift the lives of their citizens.

On education, she said the government sponsors local students for tertiary education in Namibia and that Namibian students also enroll in local universities. The minister also noted that recently Namibia recruited Setswana teachers to teach at their schools.

Furthermore, she said Botswana has ensured that ethnic groups that originated from Namibia such as Baherero were treated well and co-existed peaceful with Batswana.

She said there were many more areas and agreements that Botswana was working on with Namibia, adding that she expects relations to continue to be cordial between the two countries. ENDS
