19 Mar 2015

Approximately 6 000 athletes are expected to run at the Diacore Gaborone Marathon (DGM) on March 22.

The marathon, one of the biggest events in Botswana’s athletics calendar, would serve as qualifier for some major international races. It is also Botswana’s largest running for charity event, with proceeds from the registration fees awarded to official charities selected by DGM organisers.

The race would start at Grand Palm Resort in the morning and participants will be competing in four categories catering for seasoned runners, sports enthusiasts, friends and families.

Seasoned runners will compete in a 42.2 kilometre marathon while others will compete in a half marathon of 21.1 km and 10 km, and lastly the four kilometer will be a fun race. Stanbic Bank will for the third consecutive year sponsor the prestigious marathon with a staggering P350 000.

“We are tremendously excited to partner with Diacore Gaborone Marathon for the third year in a row and to grow this relationship further,” said Stanbic Bank Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, Tasha Ferreira when addressing members of the media at Stanbic Bank head offices on Thursday.

He further said in a plan to show an ever greater commitment to developing local athletic talent, in this year’s edition they are going to award the first male and female Motswana athlete in the 21.1 km race with prize money of P5 000.

Co-founder of DGM and chairman of the DGM organisers, Thola Magang said they are delighted to see their relationship with Stanbic Bank Botswana growing even further.  He added that not only has the marathon become a truly un-missable calendar in sport, but it has also become a key driver of local philanthropic efforts.
