GU walk past Nico to reach final
16 Mar 2015
Gaborone United’s 1-0 win against Nico United on Sunday (March 15) has seen the former proceeding to the Mascom Top 8 Cup final billed for April 25.
Moyagoleele went into the semi-final second leg in Selebi Phikwe with a 2-1 advantage thus qualifying with an aggregate of 3-1.
GU’s danger man, Benson Shilongo scored the only goal in the middle of the second half after exposing Taboka Daniel. Prior to the goal, on balance of scale, both teams had a chance to win the game.
Majombolo’s goal poacher, Christopher Musonda calculated his teammates’ movements well and received balls in good positions but was let down by poor finishing. Skipper Richard Legwaila, who was instrumental during the elimination of Mochudi Centre Chiefs and scoring a hat-trick in the quarter finals, failed to come to the party.
However, he had two good attempts in the dying minutes that were denied by Goitseone Phoko. GU should thank Phoko for his contribution during the game as he stood up to deny Nico any chance to reverse their goal deficit.
Their victory would now see them lock horns with Township Rollers in the Mascom Top 8 final next month and one would safely say both teams have the chance to scoop the title each for the second time. Rollers won the cup in 2012 while GU won it two years ago.
In a post-match interview, Nico United coach, Wesley Mondo blamed the referee for the loss. On the other hand, GU mentor, Rahman Gumbo said that they had expected Nico to seek an early goal. However, he said when they realised that their opponents were not offensive, they amplified their attack for an away goal.
Meanwhile, Gumbo said they would, in the meantime concentrate on the league because the Mascom Top 8 final would only be played next month. ENDS
