Khama explains fishing regulation
16 Mar 2015
The Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism has regulated fishing in Lake Ngami to avert damage to the environment and aquatic life in the lake, Mr Tshekedi Khama has said.
Responding to a question in Parliament last on March 12, he said his ministry “is concerned with the situation at Lake Ngami and has put in place mechanisms to regulate fishing.
To date, Lake Ngami had an approved management plan and "my ministry is in the process of finalising the revised fish protection regulations.” He said fishing activities at Lake Ngami had been suspended for a year effective 31 March 2015.
“The suspension is to allow regulatory measures to be put in place and allow all the stakeholders, especially the community trust, to become operational and actively involved in the management of Lake Ngami. Ngami MP, Mr Thato Kwerepe had asked the minister whether it was not appropriate to draft a policy to regulate fishing in Lake Ngami. ENDS
