Ghanzi residents welcome ministers decision
10 Mar 2015
Residents of Ghanzi have welcomed the decision by the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, to consider a resident for the post of deputy court president.
Giving an update during a kgotla meeting, the chairperson of the delegation assigned to spearhead the matter, Mr Bashi Thiite said the minister had accepted and agreed to their request.
Mr Thiite said the acceptance came after numerous consultations with the district commissioner and the community failed to resolve the matter.
He said the community decided urgently to contact the minister who ended up accepting their request. Mr Thiite said the delegation’s last meeting which was held on February 24 in Gaborone, bore fruit after explaining to the minister why they want the deputy Court President post localised.
The community wanted someone who understood their cultural boundaries and would uphold their culture; hence they wanted the post to be localised.
The post of the deputy court president had been vacant since 2010, after the retirement of Kgosi Silence Setima, and the situation resulted in backlog of cases that the court president could not handle alone. However, the Ghanzi youths were urged to apply for the post as soon as it gets advertised. ENDS
