Debswana Diamond Company is committed to educating the nation, says twaneng mine general manager, Mr Albert Milton.

Speaking in Kanye during the handover of upgraded science laboratories to Seepapitso Senior Secondary School on March 6, Mr Milton aid his company believed that an educated society would lead to an informed and productive nation.

He revealed that his company had invested about P1 million in upgrading laboratories with a view to creating a conducive teaching and learning environment for both teachers and students. He argued that it was critical to build the future of the nation on skilled and competent individuals.

The mining company continued to work closely with schools in the region in order to improve curriculum for subjects like Mathematics, English and Science.

The GM said his company valued the people, environment and the communities within which they do business. He said the company would further spend P3 million this year on Corporate Social Investment projects in Jwaneng and surrounding areas like Lefhoko, Tsonyane, Maboane, Sese and Sekoma. He has thus challenged both teachers and students to take advantage of the facilities and strive for excellence particularly in the field of science.

“I am particularly passionate about these labs because they are close to the industry that we are in; therefore it is my wish that the facilities may nurture a passion for the sciences amongst you so that you become great engineers and scientists of tomorrow,” he said.

Kgosi Malope II of Bangwaketse expressed delight in the company’s active efforts to develop Batswana, adding that the company built a state of the art kgotla shelter in Kanye recently. Kgosi Malope argued that it was pivotal for companies to have a corporate social responsibility for the communities within which they operate.

Meanwhile, the Kanye Administration Authority sub-regional chairperson has also challenged both teachers and students to utilise the facilities fully.

He said the upgraded laboratories should naturally spur them to produce good results, adding that smart boards entailed in the project would enhance interactive teaching and enable the teachers to be both creative and effective since they now have internet connection. ENDS
