08 Mar 2015
President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama visited Moremi in the Lerala/Maunatlala constituency on March 5.
During the visit, the President donated a number of items to the elderly, destitute people, football teams and the Village Development Committee (VDC).
The donated items included blankets for the elderly and destitute persons, solar lights for the VDC, refreshments for children and sports wear for two football teams, including tracksuits and Bibles. The elderly and the destitute people were later treated to a dinner by the President.
The area MP, who is also the Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Prince Maele thanked the President for the visit, explaining that the solar lights would be used while the village was awaiting connection to the national electricity grid.
He informed the residents that Moremi would be among the 10 villages to be connected with electricity in the 2015/16 financial year. This, he said, had been confirmed by the Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Mr Kitso Mokaila in his 2015/16 budget proposals.
Moremi leader, Kgosi Tshito Days, said 13 VDC houses needed maintenance to address the problem of shortage of accommodation for public officers.
He said there was also a need to increase sitting allowances for VDC and social welfare committee members. The tribal leader also informed the gathering that poor rains in his area had resulted in poor harvest.
In response, President Khama informed Kgosi Days that he had taken note of his requests and that he would make a follow up to see how to assist. ENDS
