Stray livestock worrisome
08 Mar 2015
Principal matimela officer, Mr France Ben, in Shakawe has complained of many stray livestock roaming the village.
Speaking in a kgotla meeting recently, he said the livestock was destroying peoples’ properties as well as eating crops for beneficiaries of the poverty eradication programme, noting also that they even cause road accidents.
Mr Ben said stray animals also encouraged stock theft because thieves took advantage of livestock that seemed not to have owners. He said some people disowned their livestock after realising that they had destroyed peoples’ fields or had caused accidents.
He urged people to brand and look after their livestock, noting that as from 1st April stray livestock found in the village would be impounded. For his part, Kgosi Kia Lempadi noted that there were many animals roaming the village and wondered if they had owners.
He added that people knew their livestock only when they had to sell or slaughter them during weddings and funerals. ends
