Land Overseers decry meagre allowance
21 Mar 2013
Some land overseers for Ngwato Land Board have complained about “meagre allowances that they get.”
Land overseers work with land boards in the management of land in their areas, and to ensure that allocated land does not conflict with the land use of the area.
One land overseer in Paje, Mr Gaboakelwe Rapontsho said the paltry allowance they get from the land boards is inadequate and not equivalent to the volume of work they do.
Mr Rapontsho said they spend long hours in the sun demarcating plots, only for them to get P100 a day, adding that they have to walk long distances in unbearable weather conditions.
He said their allowance needs to be reviewed because they are doing an important job in the community.
For her part, Ngwato Land Board principal information and public relations officer, Ms Chandapiwa Baputaki said the allowances are determined by the salaries review commission and are based on the volume of work done.
She explained that land overseers accompany land board officers to allocation sites within their village boundaries. She added that they are volunteers influenced by the desire to have an efficient and effective land management system in their communities.
She said with improvement in technology, land administration processes and skilled manpower, the role of land overseers will diminish with time.ENDS
