Botswana not ready to host AFCON

Minister of Youth Sport and Culture, Mr Thapelo Olopeng says Botswana will be able to bid for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations Tournament once the country has requisite sports facilities to do so.

Answering a question in Parliament, Mr Olopeng said for a country to host the tournament, it was a requirement that they have at-least one stadium with a seating capacity of 40 000 people.

He said such stadium is used for the official opening and the closing ceremony adding that his ministry has proposed building of a stadium of this capacity during NDP 11.

Mr Olopeng said the other requirement is that there should be three other stadia with a seating capacity of 20 000, which are used for the elimination matches during the group stages of the tournament.

He said the country already has these stadia in Gaborone with a capacity of 20 000, Lobatse 19 634 while Francistown has a capacity of 26 000.Ramotswa MP, Mr Samuel Rantuana had asked when Botswana will bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations Tournament. ENDS
