'DCEC officers do not assault people'

04 Mar 2015

GABORONE - The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) wishes to set the record straight regarding an article carried on the Telegraph of February 25, 2015 titled “NEDC employee threatens to sue DCEC”.

A press release from DCEC states that the said article is about a certain Ashley Moyo who was questioned by the DCEC sometimes last year then claimed to have been assaulted by Mr Lucky Mpugwa of the DCEC in the presence of other DCEC officers.

It says the fact of the matter is that the alleged drama took place at the DCEC offices in which the DCEC officer was the one who was assaulted in a quarrel concerning cell phones of the said lady which were taken as part of the investigations.

An assault case was laid by the officer at the police and the file is currently at the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) awaiting assessment.

The DCEC says it would therefore like to assure the public that DCEC officers are not allowed to assault or torture suspects in carrying out investigations.

The public is further advised to follow proper channels if they have queries about any matter concerning the DCEC rather than resorting to some unlawful and retributive means to seek redress. BOPA
