Orange designs 4G smart phone

03 Mar 2015

The Orange Group has designed an affordable 4G Android smart phone called Orange Roya, so that 4G can become affordable to people who cannot afford to buy the iPhones and other types of smartphones.

Updating members of the press in terms of what had been the reaction from the public following the launch of Orange 4G.

Orange Botswana’s Corporate Affairs director, Ms Lepata Mafa said the special 4G phone offered specifications and features traditionally associated with more expensive devices for just P1 500 on Prepaid or free on certain Orange Postpaid plans.

The Orange Roya, Ms Mafa said was specifically meant to address the needs of those who could not afford other costly smartphones currently on the market, adding that “there is really no excuse, not to use 4G.”

The purpose of the briefing was to demonstrate to the members of the press that Orange 4G was working and also afford them an opportunity to experience it for themselves so that when they talk or write about it they do so from an informed point of view and could attest that it was indeed working.

“For Orange Botswana, 4G is here and we will demonstrate to you what 4G means today and what it is capable of. It’s not a dream. It’s not a theory. It’s not just talk.” said Ms Mafa.

Since the launch of Orange 4G, Ms Mafa said Orange had seen an increase in terms of the uptake and more and more people coming up to buy the 4G simcards, to buy 4G devices and people are actually using the 4G.

During the Oscar awards, two weeks back, she said” we’ve seen a spike in our data consumption- showing indeed that people really have been thirsting for seamless video play. They have been looking for a way in which they can use their data without struggling.”

Furthermore, Ms Mafa said the Orange 4G roll out plans were on track and Orange Botswana would continue to increase its sites for the benefit of its customers and soon would have more than 40 4G sites in Gaborone.

She said the service was launched in Francistown last week, adding that it would soon be launched in Maun and Palapye.

Currently, in Gaborone, Orange Botswana Corporate Affairs director said there were 25 sites which were live on 4G, namely; Extension 10, Game city, Gaborone West Industrial, BBS, Broadhurst Water Tank, Gabs BDO, Broadhurst Industrial, Universal Estate, PPC Cement, RIPcO, Village, Bolck 8 DTC, Phakalane, Camphill, Poso House, Fairgrounds, Tirelo House, MSA (CBD), Limkokwing, Gaborone Sun, Block 10, SSKI Airport, Time Project, Badiri Park and Block 3 Industrial.

“So, we really tried to cover as much of the city as possible. But, this is not all. We will continue to density this network. We intend to have 101 sites from Gaborone, Francistown, Maun and other towns,” she added.

The idea, she said was to cover more than 30 towns with 4G, which would include; Mogoditshane, Tlokweng, Gabane, Oodi, Mmopane, Metsimotlhabe, Thamaga, Jwaneng, Molepolole, Goodhope, Kanye, Mochudi, Mahalapye, Lobatse, Ramotswa, Letlhakane, Palapye, Shoshong, Serowe, Mmadinare, Selebi-Phikwe, Nata, Orapa, Tatisiding, Masunga, Tutume, Ghanzi, Kasane, Tsabong and Maun.ENDS
