Kanye Administration Authority sub-council chairman, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela says destitution remains one of the major challenges in the sub-district.
Speaking at a sub-council meeting recently, Mr Dibeela indicated that the number of beneficiaries had been increasing.
He indicated that there were 4 791 people as both permanent and temporary destitutes, needy students, orphans and Community Home Based Care clients supported by the council. On average, he said the council spent about P15 million per year, hence the need for joined efforts towards reducing the numbers.
Mr Dibeela also urged stakeholders to join hands in efforts to intensify implementation and think of ways to ensure that projects under poverty eradication and youth development fund were diversified on the comparative advantage of the sub-district.
However, he indicated that some projects were not doing well because they were unable to sell their products and because there were no designated slaughter points in the sub district.
“I wish to appreciate challenges like lack of market faced by some of our projects. I am however pleased to inform this house that government took heed of our plea to create a lucrative environment for our poultry projects, especially broilers to penetrate the market,” he said.
Thus, he encouraged all institutions like secondary schools and the hospital to buy local products in support of local businesses.
He also indicated that government employees played an integral part in service delivery, thus should compete with the private sector in driving the Botswana economy.
“The government has already introduced an award and reward systems to recompense and motivate high performance. It is a grateful recognition for hard work, commitment and devotion towards excellence service delivery,” he said.
He added that they had also introduced employee of the month initiative in three categories of junior employee, best supervisor and best manager as a way of motivating staff and recognising their efforts.
Further, he encouraged his colleagues to work as a team saying, “it is my wish to plant a nurture seed of team work amongst us. We cannot afford to work in isolation nor in different direction while we are serving one master being the customer.”
The chairman also told the meeting that it had been resolved that every month the sub district took services to the people and a schedule had been prepared in order to improve service delivery.
Kanye Seventh Adventist Hospital chief executive officer, Dr Bakwena Sikwa told the meeting of their mandate as the hospital of dispensing medical items against distributing them.
Dr Sikwa also said they provided guidance and counselling to those who sought family planning services.
Further, she explained however, that the family planning mandate fell under the clinic mandate, not the hospital hence encouraged people to always visit the clinics for such services. ENDS
