President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama has requested the Ministry of Agriculture to propose measures that could be employed to cushion farmers against the envisaged drought and alleviate the impacts of insufficient food production.
President Khama said this during a series of kgotla meetings he addressed in Kgope, Lentsweletau and Mahetlwe in the Letsweletau-Mmopane constituency on February 26. The President also informed residents about changes in the cabinet.
He announced that the Vice President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi, will effective Sunday (March 1) relinquish ministerial duties at the education ministry to fully apply his energies towards the vice presidency.
Specially elected MP, Dr Unity Dow was elevated to fill the void left by VP Masisi while Serowe North legislator, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse will move from backbench to be one of the assistant ministers in the education ministry..
President Khama also announced that he had given agriculture minister, Mr Christiaan De Graaff a two months leave owing to health conditions, while his assistant, Mr Patrick Ralotsia will in the meantime act as minister assisted by Tonota North, MP Fidelis Molao.
Meanwhile an official of Botswana Power Corporation, Mr Petros Mosholombe told residents of Kgope that their village would not have electricity connected in the near future. “Due to financial constraints I can confirm that even for 2015/2016 financial year Kgope is not one of the villages that have been selected for connection,” he said.
Instead, he noted, Kgope had been included in the 11th National Development Plan. This was in response to Kgosi Bontshetse Mokgalo who had complained that civil servants shunned working in their village because conditions were tough owing to lack of electricity.
Botswana Police Service's Oreeditse Mautle also promised that arrangements would be made where a Commissioner of Oaths will visit Kgope at least once a week to administer oaths since the post was manned by a non commissioned officer.
A youthful resident Dorothy Kgadimapa expressed worry that policies were a bit cock-eyed in that she could only qualify for land provided she pursued an agricultural project while her passion was in operating a pre school in Kgope.
Although the land board conceded that their hands were tied due to policy boundaries, civic and community plots are as is procedure advertised for transparency and an allocation given to the winning bid. ENDS
