No legal instrument on plastic bags levy

Assistant Minister of Trade, Mr Sadique Kebonang has said there is no legal instrument that imposes levy on plastic bags.
Answering a question in Parliament, he said bags were charged like any other commodity by various retailers as a cost recovery measures following the introduction of a compulsory standard for plastic carrier bags, which they indicate caused an increase in their cost of production.
Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa has asked the minister to state if there were any plans to discontinue the plastic levy that consumers continued to pay when they purchase goods from various retailers. ENDS
